Kiddi Beat Ed assists busy teachers, parents and caregivers by providing them with accessible, easy to use music lesson units. Each publication comes complete with all the sound material required throughout the year. The programs are specifically formulated for pre-school and primary schools to be used for children between 3 and 9 years and the activities compliment and develop the capabilities of each age group.
The music sessions are based on themes drawn from the child’s environment (fires, animals, my body, shopping, transport, my birthday, cell phones, on the mine, seasons, senses, other countries, the orchestra and many more). Different themes are addressed in each book.
Music for Me and My Music also incorporate activities that promote an awareness of the structural elements in music (high/low, fast/slow, loud/quiet, etc.) in a simple, clear manner.
Activity areas include singing, moving, listening, playing instruments, being creative and seeing pictures, symbols and concrete media. The following kinds of activities are included:
The units also provide non-musical activities that facilitate social, perceptual, motor, emotional, language, communication and conceptual development.
Activities often integrate other art forms, for example, visual arts, dance and drama.
All the required sound material is included on the CD’s. This includes songs, sound effects, rhymes, music examples and classical music recordings. Each book is accompanied by 2 CD’s which contain between 45 and 75 tracks per disk. The music features female, male and child vocalists. The songs are mainly English, but Afrikaans, Sotho, Zulu, Setswana, German, and French songs are also featured. Well-known songs and tunes are used, as well as fun new songs. Take note that the songs are not printed in music notation.
Visual media is included at the end of each lesson. This includes, for example, flashcards, worksheets, pictures, stories, and cards. The teacher or parent can show a picture from the book, or enlarge, colour, and/or laminate it.
Concrete media is not included in the package, eg. bubble maker, empty toilet rolls, sticks for a fire, plastic pill boxes, feathers, hoops, rubber bands, bean bags.
You also need to provide your own instruments. Rhythm sticks, bells and shakers for all the children are the most important. Fun, inexpensive suggestions are given in the units whereby you can make your own instruments from ‘rubbish’ like coffee tins, water bottles and bottle caps.
Hints are provided to help with formative assessment as the child progresses towards the outcomes. These are clearly delineated in the units.
Additional activities are provided which can be included or excluded, as time permits.
Units work together in 4 sequential sessions. Activities are creatively repeated or extended, and new ones are added.
Teachers, parents and caregivers have the freedom to work with the material according to their own needs. They can start anywhere, with any theme, and add or delete as they go along.
